In honor of Black Music Month, A.M. May & Associates, Celeste Productions, and Metro-Detroit Performing Arts Center are bringing Dr. Arthur Jones to Detroit for a lecture/concert on the historical, psychological, cultural, and spiritual impact of Negro Spirituals, Saturday, June 13 from 11AM to 3PM and during Sunday Mass June 14 at 10:30AM at Detroit's historic Gesu Church. Dr. Jones, the subject of the PBS documentary by Bob Abernethy titled, "African-American Spirituals" (August 25, 2005), is Clinical Professor of Culture and Psychology and Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence at Colorado Women’s College at the University of Denver, and author of "Wade in the Water: The Wisdom of the Spirituals". The program will also be a celebration of the legacy of the Melzarian Chorale and its founder/director, Ms. Mary E. Walton-May. In addition to her contributions over 40 years as a private music teacher, 30 plus years as professor at Marygrove College's Institute of Music and Dance, pianist and organist for numerous churches in the Methodist, Baptist, and Catholic traditions, adviser to the Delta Omicron Music Fraternity, and live and recorded performances, she also shared her gifts with the community by founding the Melzarian Chorale in the late 1960s/early 1970’s. With a group of young people from various Christian denominations from the metro-Detroit area, they shared their music and ministry with audiences over the span of twenty years, receiving accolades along the way including from the Masonic Temple’s Scottish Rite Cathedral and Pope John Paul II. Saturday June 13 will be the first performance by the group in twenty years. Admission: $20 advanced tickets through June 11 at: http://www.MDPAC.brownpapertickets.com; $25.00 at the door.
