Fifty-three years ago, our nation committed to the principle that no American should be denied health insurance for being too old or too poor. Medicare—which primarily serves the elderly—and Medicaid—which serves low-income seniors and families, pregnant women, children and people with disabilities—were signed into law on July 30, 1965. But as we celebrate the anniversary of these bedrock programs that provide vital services to 120 million Americans, including over 3.9 million in Michigan, Medicare and Medicaid are under attack from President Trump and Republicans in Congress. So too is Medicaid’s younger sibling, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which expanded Medicaid coverage to nearly 12 million more Americans and improved Medicare by lowering costs for seniors. The timing of this day of action is especially key as Senators contemplate a new Supreme Court Justice who would likely support overturn of the ACA including pre-existing condition protections and even Medicaid expansion. We will be thanking our Michigan Senators for standing strongly against the SCOTUS nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, and standing strongly with Michigan families.
