Senate Theater
RoboCop, 1987 directed by Paul Verhoeven starring Peter Weller and Nancy Allen "In a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories." 26 years after it's release, RoboCop remains a classic. With all of the rapid changes in Detroit, there are many angles to the conversation about progress. RoboCop provides a relevant allegory. Come enjoy a film in the neighborhood. Come watch the 1987 cult classic at Detroit's beautiful Senate Theatre; home of the Wurlitzer organ that belonged to the Fisher theatre for decades. The Detroit Theatre Organ Society salvaged the organ when the Fisher theatre closed in 1960 and gave it a home in the newly remodeled Senate Theatre. In the heart of Southwest Detroit, the Senate theatre boasts a beautiful (and yes slightly macabre) atmosphere. Open from 1926-1955, the theatre witnessed a series of ups and downs, from immense popularity to a time of limited showings of horror and x-rated films. It was reopened in 1962 and has continued to be a fixture for the arts in Detroit. If you have never been, this will be a great time for you to experience the gem that is the Senate and support Detroit's oldest independant film theatre. Tickets $10. There will be a 30-minute panel discussion before the film to examine the ongoing themes of corruption in Detroit and parallel the film's relevance to the current political climate within the city. This is a fundraiser to elect Democratic Party candidate Elena Herrada to represent Detroit, Ecorse and River Rouge in the Sixth District of the Michigan House of Representatives. Veteran grassroots activist, Herrada currently serves on the Detroit Public School Board. Herrada has fought staunchly against Emergency Management. As State Representative, she promises to fight for equal education, the restoration of rights to Detroiters, jobs for youth, protection of pensions and fight against the privatization of public resources.
