Lyndon Township, located in northwestern Washtenaw County, Michigan, has received an application from McCoig Materials, Inc. for a special land use permit to operate a sand and gravel mine on property that is zoned rural residential. The proposed mining site is surrounded by public recreation lands (view map). It is adjacent to the Waterloo and Pinckney State Recreation Areas and Washtenaw County's Park Lyndon. The Waterloo-Pinckney Trail runs along the boundary of the proposed site. It is across from Green Lake and the Green Lake Campground. These public spaces are enjoyed year-round by local, regional and in-state residents as well as out-of-state tourists. The proposed mine would operate for 22 to 30 years 6 days a week . 60 to 80 tandem-trailer gravel trucks would make round trips to and from the proposed mine daily. This would result in an additional truck traveling on Main Street through the heart of Chelsea every 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Two public meetings were held by the Township in February and March, 2014 to inform citizens about the special use permit application process and allow the public to voice their opinions. There was overwhelming opposition to the mine at both meetings and the second one drew over 600 people, with local Chelsea resident and celebrity Jeff Daniels joining the voices to speak out against it. We are encouraging every citizen to voice their opinion because every voice counts! McCoig has also submitted a permit application to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The DEQ also needs to hear from citizens about negative impacts to wetlands and inland lakes and streams within and surrounding the proposed mining operation site. A public hearing is planned but the date is not yet set. When you submit your comments to the DEQ, they will put you on a mailing list for the public hearing.
