Please join us on March 14 for a national conversation on how the economy is set up to trap us in debt and how we can fight back! People like you all over the country are gathering locally to put the focus on resisting the debt system be it student debt, medical debt, mortgage debt, consumer debt, debt from policing and courts or any other source. The Economic Justice Alliance of Michigan (EJAM) is excited to host Up From Debt in Detroit. Up From Debt will connect people’s experiences and fights, address impacts on people of color and women, and start to frame debt as a deep and broad problem that needs both universal and targeted solutions. The goals of the event are to: ● Talk about the impact of debt on people’s lives, analyze how structures and institutions push people into the debt trap ● Create a venue where people can break the shame and isolation associated with debt and feel empowered to fight back together ● Give support at the grassroots level with those who are fighting against the various forms of debt including medical debt, foreclosure debt, legal financial obligations, student loan debt, payday lending, predatory small business lending, and credit card debt ● Identify big policy ideas for freeing people of debt, minimizing future debt, and ending the devastating impact Up From Debt Conference with focus on the need for Paid Sick Days When: Saturday, March 14, 2015, 10:30-3:30 pm Where: Hannan House, located at 4750 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48201 Free parking is available behind Hannan House. It is the presentiment that imagination is more real and reality less real than it looks. It is the suspicion that the overwhelming brutality of fact that oppresses us and represses us is not the last word. It is the hunch that reality is more complex than the realists want us to believe, that the frontiers of the possible are not determined by the limits of the actual, and that, in a miraculous and unexpected way, life is preparing the creative events which will open the way to freedom and resurrection." - Rubem Alvez
