Hello everyone and thanks to all who joined us Sunday for the 2016 RNC Legal Observer and Jail Support Training!! For those of you who missed it we will be holding a second one on the 26th of June same time (probably same place TBD). You do not have to be going to the RNC to get trained - please feel free to come learn the basics on your first amendment rights at political protests, Legal Observing at demonstrations and jail support for activists who are risking arrest. However, if you are planning on going to the RNC to do legal support you must attend this training first (and it will be our last one in Detroit)! Please see the information below and feel free to contact me with any question: What: Jail Support Training for the RNC When: Sunday June 26th 3:00pm Where: TBD (probably WSU Law School) What: Legal Observer Training for the RNC When: Sunday June 26th 5:00pm Where: TBD (probably WSU Law School) RNC LEGAL OBSERVER TRAINING Do you want to help protect 1st amendment rights at protests and demonstrations? Interested in providing legal support this summer at the Republican National Convention? Learn more about becoming a Legal Observer! The Detroit and Michigan Chapter of the NLG is currently building capacity to provide legal support for demonstrations during the RNC in Cleveland, OH from July 18th through July 21st. This training will include the foundations of all LO trainings – to serve as a witness and possible deterrent against unconstitutional police practices - but it will also include information specific to the RNC such as: - Cleveland ordinances & free speech zones - What to do if a mass arrest occurs - Anticipated tactics and weaponry of Cleveland PD & Federal Agents Though NLG Legal Observers are typically law students, legal workers, and lawyers, trainings are open to everyone - except those working for or with government or law enforcement agencies. Legal Observer trainings are also closed to the media. RNC JAIL SUPPORT TRAINING Jail Support is both tracking arrestees as they move through the arrest and arraignment process and providing comfort to arrestees when they are released. It is a way of showing solidarity with arrested activists and a way of taking care of friends and community. This training will discuss how to: - take calls from protesters who are arrested at demonstrations and help them contact their families and jobs - provide information to those arrested so they know they’re not alone and that people are on the outside fighting for them; - get the necessary information so that the Ohio Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and other friendly lawyers can try to get pro bono representation for folks if they are charged in relation to their protest activities - provide presence and support at/outside of jails for those folks when they get out so they can have a cup of hot coffee, get a ride home, have money for a bus pass, get connected to legal representation, etc. - provide ongoing support to folks in many ways, including reminding them of court dates, arranging for them to get to court if they don’t have a ride, etc. Please send questions to Shanna Merola at Locoordinator@michigannlg.org For more information the Ohio NLG Chapter has launched an RNC 2016 Legal Support website at http://www.ohionlg.com/ https://www.facebook.com/events/1736446979926587/
