The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is holding public hearings January 6th, 2016 to address two Permit to Install applications submitted by Marathon Oil in an area already known as a Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Nonattainment area, 48217. The MDEQ tells us in the paperwork they send out, that, by installing a gasoil hydrotreater (GOHT) feed heater, a GOHT reactor, referred to as the Tier 3 Fuels Project, will result in gasoline with lower sulfur content (great news, except for those living in the so called sulfur dioxide nonattainment area in the shadow of the Marathon plant). They also are requesting a permit/approval to install eight Liquid Propane storage tanks. MDEQ has already stated that they intend to approve both permits! They are required to hold a public hearing, even though they have already made up their minds. There will be an information session from 6PM til 7PM, and the public hearing will be held starting at 7 PM. If you would like a copy of the documents ahead of time to plan your approach you can call the MDEQ and request that they mail you a copy. The "Notice of Air Pollution Comment Period and Public hearing, the "Fact Sheet," and the draft permit ciinditions regarding MDEQ's analysis of the proposed projects are available at http://www,\deq.state.mi.us/aps/cwerp.shtml or you can call Andrew J, Drury, Senior Environmental Engineer, Permit Section, Air Quality Division, at 1-517-284-6792.
