Sentencing for Barb Carter, Vicci Hamlin, & Lisa Leggio: the MICATS3 After the 1/31/14 guilty verdict, in which our 3 awesome cats were refused bond and incarcerated. Sentencing is scheduled for 1:15, but please show up earlier to get settled! Sign this petition to show solidarity with the Mi-CATS 3, their efforts to reverse ecological collapse and defend future generations’ access to fresh water, a stable climate, and clean breathable air. http://www.credomobilize.com/petitions/free-the-felines-the-mi-cat-3 The Action, Arrests, and Trial The Great Lakes contain 21% of the world’s fresh water and it is in our interest to protect it. The lakes are fed by countless watersheds, streams, and rivers whose purity is essential to keep the lakes clean. In July, 2010, a pipeline carrying tar sands oil from Canada to the Marathon refinery in SW Detroit, burst dumping nearly a million barrels of oil into the Kalamazoo River which flows to Lake Michigan. That pipeline is owned by the Canadian oil company Enbridge Energy and they have still not sufficiently cleaned the spill despite a December 31st 2013 deadline set by the EPA. Meanwhile, Enbridge has been doing work to divert the broken pipeline (line 6B) and ensure their profits keep flowing along with the oil. The environmental action group Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands (MI-CATS) and their sister organization, Detroit Coalition Against Tar Sands (D-CATS) chose to protest the continued construction of the pipeline and in July of 2013, a handful of activists locked themselves to machinery and successfully stopped work for the day. As a result, the MI-CATS 3 were arrested for trespassing and resisting and obstructing a police officer. They were found guilty after a four day trial during which the judge did not allow the defendants to discuss the 2010 oil spill or other environmental issues that served as motive for their actions. The judge ordered them held without bond until sentencing March 5th which is unconscionable. Being held without bond prior to sentencing is only warranted when the judge believes the defendants are a flight risk or pose a serious threat to the community. The Defendants Vicci Hamlin is a 60-year-old great-grandmother who has been involved in social activism since the 1960s and until being taken into custody worked as a domestic abuse counselor in Indiana. Barb Carter, 22, lives in Detroit and works with the homeless community. She is an active member of Occupy Detroit and lives three miles from a tar sands refinery which she says makes it hard for her to breathe when she enters or leaves her home. Lisa Leggio, a single mother of two, is expecting her first grandchild very soon. Originally from Brooklyn, she was active in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and organized with Occupy Sandy – logging almost 200 hours of service time in two weeks. Should these three get the same treatment as murderers? The EPA has been unsuccessful in their sanctioning effort and calls from the community have gone unheard. Despite the huge, long term environmental damage they’ve caused, Enbridge is content to conduct business as usual and pay the fines that are infinitesimal compared to their soaring profits. The fact is that MI-CATS, D-CATS and these three brave women felt that if politicians who are meant to represent us, are putting the profit of corporations before the well-being of people and ALL life on this planet, it is our moral duty and obligation to represent ourselves and peacefully challenge these unjust systems. http://www.facebook.com/events/1419840344925611/

*UPDATE* The MI-CATS trial resumes, and is expected to end on Thursday. ------------------------------------------------------------ Before sunrise Vicci Hamlin, Barbara Carter, Lisa Leggio and Will Lawrence put their lives on the line in an act of civil disobedience by locking down to heavy machinery to halt expansion of Enbridge Line 6B, the same location of the largest on land oil spill in history. "If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so." Jury selection and trial will begin on January 27th. These courageous cats face 2-3 years in prison for an act of peaceful civil disobedience. STAND WITH MICATS!
