Detroit DSA invites you to join us for our annual dinner on May 5, 2018. This year, we are thrilled to announce that our keynote speaker will be Nina Turner, president of Our Revolution, an organization that Bernie Sanders created to revitalize American democracy, empower progressive leaders and elevate political consciousness. Nina was a national surrogate for Sanders during the turbulent 2018 Democratic presidential primaries and has been an insightful advocate and agent for social change. The Douglass Debs Dinner is the one time each year in which we engage in fundraising for our chapter, we do not ask for local dues from our members. The money we raise at this dinner supports all of our activities for the next year. Visit douglassdebs2018.eventbrite.com for ticket information. NOTE: The starting time was recently changed from 5 pm to 6 pm.

April 23, 2018, marks the 65th anniversary of Enbridge’s easement that allows them to operate Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. It's time for Line 5 to retire because 65 years of this pipeline remaining as a threat to the Great Lakes is long enough. Join us for this special event. We'll watch the livestream video from Traverse City Opera House, and talk with each other about the actions we can all take to shut this pipeline down. We're providing food and beverages. Come for a great time to learn about this pipeline and how to take action this summer. Please RSVP here: https://www.oilandwaterdontmix.org/line_5_retirement_party_detroit_red_door_digital

a coalition of leftist organizations is calling for all who oppose fascism to show up to demonstrate Richard Spencer's conference in Metro Detroit. The location is still unknown as the conference organizers are withholding the location because they are worried organizers will shut them down. There are several other groups working to shut Spencer down and we stand in solidarity with these groups against the fascist threat. In the case that they do reveal the location in time, or cancel the event, we will use this opportunity to organize against Spencer's speech at MSU which is taking place the following day. Anti fascists are meeting at noon on Monday, March 5 in commuter lot 89 at Farm Lane and Mt. Hope in East lansing

Join the Detroit Democratic Socialists of America chapter for our second book club meeting as we discuss the last chapters of "The New Jim Crow" at The Bottom Line Coffee House in Detroit. FREE ELECTRONIC COPY OF BOOK (for educational purposes only) https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B_akx02w9nqDaHVfeXNidFI2ZnM BOOK TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWvEfg8bVB4 PURCHASE BOOK: http://newjimcrow.com/about/buy The New Jim Crow is a stunning account of the rebirth of a caste-like system in the United States, one that has resulted in millions of African Americans locked behind bars and then relegated to a permanent second-class status—denied the very rights supposedly won in the Civil Rights Movement. Since its publication in 2010, the book has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than a year; been dubbed the “secular bible of a new social movement” by numerous commentators, including Cornel West; and has led to consciousness-raising efforts in universities, churches, community centers, re-entry centers, and prisons nationwide. The New Jim Crow tells a truth our nation has been reluctant to face.
