“The nuclear “football” contains the launch codes to be used by the President of the United States to order a nuclear strike against enemies. The decision to open, let alone use, the “football” is shrouded in extraordinary secrecy, requiring the highest security clearance. The “football” is but one small part of a vast nuclear-military complex that most Americans know very little about. Yet, these weapons “give a very small number of people the power to annihilate very large numbers of people.” The secrecy, speed and scale of nuclear weapons used in battle makes Congressional authorizations of war useless, violating a constitutional requirement and undermining democracy Yet, American taxpayers will pay more than $1.5 trillion dollars over the next 30 years on nukes!” – Dr. Venugopal What can we do about it? This talk will discuss how the global movement to abolish nuclear weapons is fundamentally a struggle, not only for peace, but for democracy! Prasad is an Associate Professor of Physics and affiliate faculty in the African American Studies Program at the University of Detroit Mercy. He has written numerous articles and spoken widely on US foreign policy issues, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel-Palestine, India-Pakistan and Global Nuclearization.
