We are gathering to ask consumers to withhold their hard earned wages from buying Sakuma Bros. Farms strawberries, blueberries and blackberries and at major distributors Driscoll’s and Nestlé [Häagen-Dazs & Yoplait Berry flavored Dairy Products] Since Driscoll holds a near monopoly of the Strawberry markets under various subsidiaries and are sold under different brands as well, we are asking in Solidarity that we buy absolutely no Strawberries until Sakuma Bros (the grower of Dricoll's products - negotiates with Farm workers and their recognized bargaining agent, Familias Unidas por la Justicia. https://www.facebook.com/FamiliasUnidas We are asking that all who wish to attend, come and walk with us as we leaflet customers and urge them not to buy Driscoll's. We have pledge cards, information relating to the farm conditions and Legal Advisors who have assured us of our rights under the NLRA. https://www.nlrb.gov/rights-we-protect/whats-law/unions/secondary-boycotts-section-8b4 Please -send a letter supporting the workers to: Sakuma Bros. Stores are accountable to community members and customers: Farmworkers are some of the most underpaid and hardest working and yet are exempt from the most basic legal protections, including child labor law. Women have been preyed upon by bosses. They work and live in terrible and unsafe conditions. Management has retaliated against workers for simply asking for better conditions, breaks and a highter piece rate pay, by splitting up family housing based on gender, creating a hostile work environment. Sakuma has broken agreements with workers and stopped negotiating completely. Please don't buy Driscoll's until they negotiate with workers!

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump will be speaking at a local GOP fundraiser in Birch Run on August 11. We want to help send a message that Trump's anti-immigrant and anti-veteran beliefs aren't welcome in Michigan. Be sure to bring your homemade signs. There is only one entrance into the facility that Donald Trump will be speaking at and we want to have protesters on every side of the intersection leading into that venue. There is ample parking at local restaurants near the Big Boy. Article: http://MLive.com/news/saginaw/index.ssf/2015/07/democrats_to_rally_against_don.html

Saturday August 15th, 1:00 - 3:30 PM Wayne State University General Lectures Building Room 150 The following panel discussion is designed to explore the school to prison pipeline and mass incarceration of black men in the United States. Research shows the disproportionate representation of black men in school discipline and incarceration settings has severe consequences for urban areas and warrants extensive review. This panel will discuss pertinent research in this area and initiate solution-oriented discussion regarding this social problem. The key questions are as follows: a) How do we retain black boys in our education system, b) How does the operationalization of zero tolerance policies (i.e. armed guards, metal detectors, etc.) alter black perceptions of the educational environment, and c) How do we teach cultural competence to K-12 educators? The conference presentation will feature a scholar-activist panel and a Detroit student led panel. We believe the collaboration of students, activists, and scholars will provide an engaging discussion on this social issue and give voice to the individuals who are most affected by zero tolerance policies. http://www.facebook.com/events/1673420726222966/

Let’s discuss how our faith communities can come together to uphold the dignity of workers and the common good by workers receive a living wage. IT’S A MORAL ISSUE! Inequality of wealth and power is the root cause of most of our nation's social, political and economic ills. The call for $15 and freedom to join a union is central to building the mass movement necessary for reversing this dangerous economic and immoral trend.

Metro, grab your Bernie shirt, dust your working boots off, find your gardening gloves and let's move some tires! We'll meet at a park located at: 19541 Crusade St, Detroit Michigan 48205 Tires have been dumped at this location, preventing children from playing freely in the park. We'll stack tires up for easy retrieval, clean the grounds of garbage, and perhaps even mow some grass! If we finish early, we have a second site in mind. Let's make our neighborhoods a better, cleaner, and safer place! After all, this movement is much, much more than politics; it's about community. Things we'll need: -Work Gloves -Garbage Bags -Bernie Shirts (we have a limited supply to hand out) -Water bottles

What distinguishes FoodLab from other business support organizations is the close collaboration of everyone involved - chefs, specialty food artisans, cafe owners, coffee roasters, bakers - and the strong sense of a shared purpose that extends beyond financial goals. FoodLab 101, our membership orientation, is designed to do more than inform new members. It was created to inspire and motivate them to be active participants in the FoodLab community. This event is free to members, but please register if you’re planning to attend (it helps us to know who to prepare for!). You can find registration info here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-o1Rhc6CUdGHViOdPJexG9ktMTTzeRXG2Ew_x6g8T8M/viewform FOOD: “The shared meal elevates eating from a mechanical process of fueling the body to a ritual of family and community, from the mere animal biology to an act of culture.” -Michael Pollan We’re looking forward to sharing a meal with you, deepening our relationships, and strengthening our community. With that in mind, FoodLab 101 will be a potluck! So bring a dish and show everyone who you are! It could be representative of your culture, your family, an inside joke from decades ago, or whatever you want! We’ll be participating in a community building activity during our meal, so please come prepared to share about your dish and what it means to you. BASIC AGENDA RUN-DOWN: “First we eat, then we do everything else.” -M.F.K. This film is a documentary about the the current state of initiatives by a variety of individuals, communities, corporations and states to develop clean sources of electricity. The idea is to become less dependent on on the damaging and dirty sources – fossil fuels and nuclear reactors. It's a documentary, so it presents a jumble of different approaches because there are actually a great variety of ways to approach the issues of using solar and wind power. The certainty is that there is no long-term future for today's dominant ways of generating electricity. A lot of experimenting is needed to create the best ways of replacing fossil fuels and nuclear reactors.

As was requested at the meeting, I am sharing the information on getting involved with the March for Justice in Detroit. If you could forward to partners that'd be great. AFL-CIO and Michigan United are two labor groups already participating but any union or labor group is welcome to join this call to learn more. You are invited to join a call to learn more about the Detroit March for Justice. During the call we will discuss ways that you can help us build momentum for a huge, successful event in Detroit this fall. Please join March for Justice partners from 2:30pm-3:30pm on Thursday, July 9. Call number is 866-501-6174 and the pin is 6820873# This will be a time to learn more about the march, make suggestions, hear updates, discuss logistics and learn about opportunities to get involved on the ground floor of what is an historic opportunity for Michigan’s community of justice seekers to send a clear message of solidarity. Whether the issue is environmental justice, racial justice, social justice, climate justice or worker’s rights we must demand justice for all. So please spread the word about this call to anyone who you think wants to join in the Detroit March for Justice. The March is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 3. It’s time to get involved! Please RSVP to [email protected] or call 248-924-4857.

You don't have to go anywhere for this "event". October is domestic violence awareness month, a month very important to me, and the third Friday each year is Purple day. I am asking you to join together on this one day to encourage, support, and pay respect to survivors, overcomers, and victims of domestic violence. The statistics are astonishing and a change has to be made! So on this day I ask you to join together and wear purple, as much purple as you can, to show the world that we're making a stand. I will be posting statistics frequently so if you'd like to learn more keep checking back. Together we can make this change, we can change these statistics, we can break the cycle of abuse. And please invite others! Let's make this huge!! This event will stay open and change from year to year. Just remember it is the 3rd Friday of October each year. http://www.facebook.com/events/760657477309725/
